Crazy that I can watch a live stream of a car in orbit on my cellphone.

Kinja'd!!!

Even optimistically, 8 year old me with dreams of being a rocket scientist would never have believed this is reality 20 years later

I asked my kids if they could see our house.

Kinda hard to believe that this is not a photoshopped image a first glance.

I was just watching this, and seeing it moving, happening more or less “live” is just... wow. Elon, you mad, mad, genius.

Haha, I’d share the screenshots I took... but... see above.

I keep chuckling at this. I can’t get enough.

So, is that vehicle actually going to Mars? How long is it to remain in orbit? I’m waiting to see how well the paint holds up.

No, it’ll orbit the Sun, and though it’ll cross Mars’ orbit, it’ll miss the planet by a few months. As for how long, Musk says a billion years.

If you think about it, this might be one of the most mind blowing things all of humanity has ever done. This car, Pioneer, Voyager, and New Horizons missions are the only evidence extraterrestrial life might get as a hint that we were ever here. (I don’t include the stuff left on the moon since the Earth and moon will be destroyed when the sun becomes a red giant.)

It makes you realize your place in the cosmos.

Take a moment and read what Carl Sagan had to say about our time here.

Is this an accurate statement or is this a Space Oddity joke that I’m missing?

I’d like to see what kind of shape that car is in after a while.

It’s a live stream from some kids garage in Jupiter, FL.

Fair. But most of us aren’t POTUS.

Well, the orbit will be stable for that long, whether the car will survive is another matter. The softer materials, including the paint and Starman, aren’t going to last a decade IMHO, but so long as it doesn’t encounter a stray chunk of something the body should last quite a while.

Presumably there will be a time at some point where it will have a closer approach to the planet itself. It just may be a few million years or so.

Not to downplay the accomplishment, but there’s tons of junk in orbit around the Earth and a decent amount in solar orbit.

Of course, none of those are cars with dummy spacemen, so if the goal is to confuse the shit out of some aliens Elon wins.

The craziest visual to me is actually the two boosters landing simultaneously. Feels like something we’ve only ever seen depicted in a highly optimistic 1940's animation of space travel, yet it actually happened.

Technically, that car and dummy along with the tons of junk orbiting earth will get consumed by our sun as well. So decent amount in solar orbit may be all we’ve got.

I’m just a little disappointed that the video from the car wasn’t powered by solar cells so it would send us images as long as the rig would hold up to spaceflight.

Ultraviolet. Everything plastic will dissolve rapidly, I should think. It’ll be fun in some future century when some explorer, perhaps an offspring of Elon’s, tracks it down.

This is handily the coolest thing any human being ever pulled off. Notice that POTUS hasn’t said anything about it? Jealous.
